On Assignment : Wedding 2nd Shooter & Assistant

A couple of weeks ago I got a call from Robin Shetler, asking me if I would like to help her out on a wedding. I have never shot or assisted at a wedding, but have been interested in getting my feet wet and giving it a shot.

I jumped at the opportunity and was eager for a new challenge. It was a small wedding and just the right size for me to get started.

I met Robin at the house. She had already been with the bride photographing this special day. We started out photographing the bride, bridesmaid & flower girl in various combinations. Robin took the photographs and I assisted with a reflector or scrim to improve lighting. One of our other photographer friends refers to this task affectionately as "Scrim Bitch", and I'm okay with that term. Robin is too nice to refer to me like that, but in the back of my mind I could hear Megan and I was laughing on the inside. Once we were done with these setups, we moved onto the groom for similar shots.

Before the ceremony I got some detail shots to warm up and check out angles and lighting. I decided to use a flash and help fill shadows. We were under trees and in the shade, but there was still beams of light coming through that would create weird lighting.

Here are a few from the ceremony.

After the ceremony, we took care of the formal pictures. Then it was on to the celebration.

It was a great day and as always, learned something new. Although it was a small wedding, I realized that a photographer should have an assistant for an event like this. We didn't set up any lights, but using a reflector or scrim requires a second person. A second pair of hands makes a big difference and can really improve the quality of photos. I had a great time, it was a long day and I was tired, but it was worth it.

Thank you Robin for giving me the opportunity to help out and learn. If you ever need an assistant, let me know.
